Brahms Requiem

With Matt Finch

8 June – 2 July 2021

Following the success of Mozart Requiem in Virtual Vienna, and the Glory of Rutter, we now invite you to join 100s of singers from around the world to sing Brahms’ majestic and powerful Requiem. Live online rehearsals will begin on 8 June. There is no need to sing in silence; we have a professional backing choir, Richard Gowers, and the charismatic Matt Finch to coach every section and every movement in our rehearsals.

When are the rehearsals?

Live rehearsals will begin on 8 June and last for four weeks during June with a final concert on 31 July. Rehearsals are all broadcast on YouTube which means that you can join in at a time that suits YOU.  You can pause the rehearsal, rewind, and repeat as many times as you want to during the course. After rehearsals finish we invite you to send in a recording of you singing (audio only) for inclusion in our online concert on 31 July. Once our clever engineers have mastered and mixed all the individual performances we will create an MP3 album which will be available for you to download. If there is sufficient interest we may produce a CD as well.

We will be singing in English using the same high quality text used in the critically acclaimed Peters Edition. A PDF choral score based on this text is provided for all singers.

Why sing in English?

“While all of us involved in this choice have sung, and enjoyed, the German text we feel that the challenges of recording individually and blending the resulting sound will be reduced by singing in what – for most of us – is our own language. Brahms himself  called the work his ‘Human Requiem’ a Requiem for all mankind based on a vernacular, not a Latin text. I have performed this version myself ; it is joyous, triumphant and highly singable. Unlike some older English versions, it does not take liberties with Brahms’ music – it enhances it.  The redeemed of the Lord shall return again, and come rejoicing unto Zion”                                                     Nick Couchman

What about Music

We recommend that you use the online score we provide. There’s no need to print it out – use it on an Ipad or other tablet for silent page turns. If you prefer to have your own bound copy, the Peters edition (EP 3672a) referred to above is a good match.
